Usually the ads before movies are stupid or annoying or both, but there was one yesterday that was for an item I covet: a 007 laptop.

Now, this is the kind of merchandising I want to see. We all know about the fannish trading cards and action figures and mugs, and I love them with a passion, but I would love to have a Torchwood computer, a TARDIS refrigerator, or a Veronica Mars cell phone. Items that aren't toys.

Well, I can dream, right?

*cannot remove concept of TARDIS refrigerator from head*

Gotcha.

A TARDIS would fit just fine in my kitchen. Just think of all the milk and eggs I could put into it.

Sadly, it's just a mini-fridge for drinks! £54.99.

That must be the childhood version of a TARDIS that hasn't quite reached its full growth yet.

Not a dalek pumpkin? [The link's round here somewhere...]

You can get Dalek webcams, cookie jars, and alarm-clocks!

I'd rather eat the Dalek pumpkin.

There are TARDIS zip-wardrobes, mini-fridges, and USB hubs. Check out the Forbidden Planet (http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk) catalogue!

I hardly dare to look. I'll want it all. Do not allow me to speculate about what Forbidden Planet charges to ship to Canada.

(Hmm, don't they have a New York branch? Might be cheaper.)

The USB hub particularly sounds like fun. Yes, this is the sort of thing I want!

Obviously a place of wonders and delights.

I have a notion I went to a Forbidden Planet in Dublin once, too.... With Beulah accompanying me in a besmused fashion. She has visited comic book shops from New Orleans to Ireland in my wake. I can't recall taking her to any in Scotland, though. Just bookstores there. (And she is as eager for bookstores as I am.)

I looked. I couldn't resist.

I do not want a Catherine Tate sound mug, though I rather like the notion of having Cyberman cufflinks. I would quite like a TARDIS cookie jar. This is really all such fun and since I don't want to be acquisite and materialistic I shouldn't have quite so much fun browsing their bizarre material for sale. And some not to bizarre. Replica Serenity props. I swoon!

A laptop computer with a working edition of Starfleet LCARS for the operating system. Gotta be better than Mac OS X or Windows-Whatever-they're-calling-it-this-year...or even the best flavour of Linux going.

I think someone's actually working on it, thankfully, although it's obviously not their fulltime gig.

I'd settle for a laptop with Windows and a Starfleet logo. Or better still, the Torchwood logo, or the Battlestar Galactica logo, or the Man from U.C.L.E. logo, or, yes, S.H.I.E.L.D. Possibly Legion of Super-Heroes.
