This evening I went to see the Third Wall Theatre Company's production of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe.

It was wonderful. It was lively and attention-holding and well articulated; it was imaginative and funny and sometimes moving. I've never seen a play by Marlowe... in fact, I was wondering if I have ever seen a play performed that was earlier than Shakespeare. I don't think so.

I loved Marlowe's melodious use of words - not as rich or funny as Shakespeare, but still delightful to the ear. The production made the most of the dramatic possibilities of it, but the thinness of the plot was really apparant. There are no surprises to the story - or, only those injected by the inventive staging of this production.

I see a good play like this, live, and I want to see more.

I actually *gasp* prefer Marlowe to Shakespeare (what I've read of his, that is)

Why prefer Marlowe to Shakespeare? I'm not saying you shouldn't - my surprise comes partly from my general ignorance of Marlowe, since I've never seen any of his plays before. I've read several biographies of him, but never any of his plays.

Shakespeare, of course, is right up there with Dorothy Dunnett in my estimation; I can't really imagine preferring anyone else. He writes the sexiest characters ever. And yes, I'm biased.
