First of all, I have the day off work. Yay!

Secondly, I had a fitness session today with my very own professional trainer. Well, sort of.

My friend Lynne recently underwent a radical career change and became a fitness trainer. She's now building up a list of clients and is working at a local fitness club, and loving it. She was encouraging me to exercise, and I was, really I was. But then I stopped. So when Lynne and I had brunch together the other day I confessed that. She gave me a kind but firm lecture about how my pattern is to exercise enthusiastically for about 6 weeks and then stop - which was fine but I should stop stopping. Then she offered to come over and set up a programme for me, which she did this morning.

Wow. I feel terrific.

She measured and weighed me - that was the hardest part. And sadly I'm back up to my maximum weight again. 187 pounds, if you want to know. Eeek. How'd that happen?

It was great having someone showing me what I should be doing, and how I should be doing it, and tailoring it to my needs.

Lynne learned that I'd been doing my weights with 5 lb weights. Wimpy, she said. (Isn't that suitable? After all, I am a wimp.) On her instructions, I borrowed heavier weights from the fitness room downstairs. Thought I could get them undetected - not that I think the management would mind much, but it isn't quite playing by the rules, we're supposed to leave the weights in the fitness room. So with my arms full of ten-pound and eight-pound weights, I stepped onto the elevator, and there was the super, cleaning the elevator. Oops! I probably blushed with guilt. He didn't mind.

The advantage of doing exercises in my apartment is twofold. First, half the equipment in the fitness room is broken, and the other half, I don't know how to use. (Neither does Lynne. These are mysterious contraptions that look like instruments left over from the Inquisitor's Palace.) Second, if I do exercises in my living room, I can watch TV while I do it - adding to the incentive. There are enough new shows on that I want to watch; and I have some wonderful things on DVD now, thanks to good friends like [livejournal.com profile] msilverstar and [livejournal.com profile] monsieureden and [livejournal.com profile] rosiespark. Beyond this, I can always watch episodes of Doctor Who over again. And maybe, if I'm lucky, maybe Torchwood too.

Happy smile.

Those exercises this morning made me feel terrific.

Now: time to pack for my weekend in Montreal.

I do the same thing, exercise for a while and then stop. If I had a personal trainer, I would probably do better. And same if I could do exercise in my apartment.

We'll see if having a personal trainer makes a diffence. I'm hoping!

I don't 'exercise'-exercise. I do, however, walk everywhere (though not tomorrow, as I'm planning to nip over to St Andrews - 3 hrs each way by bus!), and have run off a bit since I came out of work simply because I make a point of having a good walk to mooch around the shops or go to the library & c, every day. I'm just within OK BMI now, for my height (11 stone, 5'6").

I walk everywhere too - but it just doesn't seem to be enough. One and a half hours of walking every day, and I still gained all this weight. Life is unfair! Morevoer, it will soon be too slippery to walk to work - for a couple of months. So I have to do something!

Hmm, I guess I should take a walk around Montreal. That will be fun - a new walking environment.
