Heroes...

I watched Heroes tonight. I loved it. It's the comic book show I've always wished existed... and didn't think ever would. I liked it more than any comic book movie I've seen except Unbreakable. The characters were intriguing - Mohindar is my favourite so far, but I also loved Pete and who could resist Hiro? All good. Good in many ways, and respectful of the audience - taking the material seriously, even when doing the funny bits.

I kept making analogies to X-Men as I watched. Mohindar's father's map is a low-tech version of Cerebro. The villain must be related to Henry Peter Gyrich, by way of X-Files.

LOL, that's what I told my husband when he said the forums were full of Hiro love. We, the target audience, *are* Hiro, and get the longing to be a cool Star Trek (or comic book) character. Supoku, indeed. :)

I'm also glad someone out there appreciates Unbreakable.

Unbreakable is one of my favourite movies.

What I love most about Hiro is that there's nothing condescending about his characterization. He's all that is most attractive about a comic book geek, and he's happy to be what he is, and we're free to love him for it. Actually all the characters are treated with affection and respect, playing against the stereotype, especially the negative stereotype. So while Mohindar might be a token Indian, he isn't. While Claire might be a bratty cheerleader who doesn't like her mother - she isn't. Niki might be a sleazy hooker with a heart of gold but she isn't - she's quite interesting and complex, with an intriguing background, and with an edge.

I am most impressed.

It's very, very X-Men... but pretty entertaining, so I'm willing to forgive the rip-offness so far. And Mohindar is pretty damn gorgeous, and that doesn't hurt anything either :)

I like the X-Men, so I like the similarity. I particularly loved it that they acknowledged X-Men with a reference to Kitty Pryde. I bask in my fangirl love!

I love X-Men too, though generally any show ripping off something else bugs me. Given the broad scope of X-Men and how long it's run, however, it would be impossible to make a mutant-themed show or movie and NOT draw from it intentionally or not.

Well, so far, Heroes has neither the mutant-school theme nor the humanity vs. mutants theme, though they're skirting both - and as you say, X-Men has used so many possible mutant themes that it would be difficult not to touch on the same ones.

It's so wonderful to see a contrast - ! We need more of that among heroes on TV. I love it that they aren't all American - even in an American show - even if it's mostly set in the U.S. - and Mohindar's yumminess just makes it all better. More Mohindar!
