I went browsing in the Westboro area. I wanted to see if I could find any books to replace those [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen lost, or to see if I could find something for Tasia's birthday. These may sound like unselfish goals, but really I just felt like browsing bookstores.

I went to Mountain Equipment Co-op, where I haven't been for a long time, decided I didn't want what I'd come in for, and left.

I went to the Loblaw's Superstore at Kirkwood and Richmond Rd., and bought myself some gjetost, which is my favourite kind of cheese. But having had various medical problems over the years making cheese something I really shouldn't be eating, and because it's sort of expensive, I haven't had it in a very long time - in fact, the last time I remember buying it was 20 years ago. It's gone from abut $5.99 for 500g at that time to $12.99 now. I was hoping it would be less than $10, but I wanted it anyway. Call it a guilty pleasure. I figure that after twenty years, I can treat myself.

Hope it tastes well :-)

I had a few slices of gjetost with a sliced apple as an afternoon snack, and its price was above rubies. Truly worth $12.99 just for the portion I've had so far! - Which is maybe 1/10 of the block of cheese. And despite that, if it had cost $129.90 I wouldn't have bought it. Not because I wouldn't want to, though!

My normal index of inflation is comic books. They've gone from around twelve or fifteen cents when I was a kid, to about $4 or even $5 each now, when you add in taxes (both provincial and federal) which didn't exist back then.

It makes the cheese look cheap in comparison.

a block of cheese for more than 100 dollar, that would indeed be something.

Though, a little tidbit of information I learned recently (from watching quizess but it was one with Stephen Fry as quizmaster so I asume reliabillity) "what did Samual Pepys do when the great fire of London started? He burried a piece of Parmezan cheese he had for safe keeping". I assume it was very very expensive at that time, certainly in London.

What a fascinating tidbit about Pepys! My first thought was of course that maybe he fancied a bit of toasted cheese.... But if I were to think of one object to save from my burning house, cheese isn't the first thing I'd think of. (Not that I could carry my comic book collection, or all my books... I'd probaby just grab the Dunnett collection.)

I would take, and you can see I've thought about this before, my medication box, an etching that used to belong to my grandmother, the external harddisk on wich is the backup of my pictures and writings. If at all possible I'd like to grab my wallet, mainly for my idententy card. Fortunately I live in a tiny house and the first three things are within reach (almost) when I sit behind my computer. My wallet is in my jacket, next to the way out (presuming that I can leave my jouse trough the front door).

Yes - I've been thinking of making a pouch for my back door that has the important stuff in it, partly in case of emergency, partly because it would be a good way of organizing myself in the morning when I'm too sleepy to remember what I need to rememember. Some of the things I'd like to take with me would be impossible to carry - like my harp, which is useless and big and flammable, but it's beatiful and antique and I love it.

In reality, I'd probably just save the budgies. Living things are more valuable than objects any day.

well, having my important stuff next to the door in a bag doesn't sound practical to me, I want the etching on the wall and my hard disc plugged in. But I think it can do no harm to sometimes realize what would you take. You could consider making a folder of the most important papers and having that for grabs somewhere. (I don't own my home so that makes a difference in what I need for insurance in case of fire - yes I am insured).
amyway, I am off to bed now, have a good day and go easy on your cheese ;-)

Hmm, yes, I'm ensured too, and I should take note of what would be useful to know. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am rationing myself on cheese - no more now till tomorrow.
