Vanished...
Aug. 25th, 2006 11:34 pmThis evening Sheila and I watched the first episode of another new TV show, Vanished. I was most impressed. The dialogue was snappy and intelligent, the story kept me guessing and surprised me on several points, and though the characters didn't seem particularly real, they were intriguing. In fact, I was quite hooked - and look forward to the next episode. Unlike Eureka, where I slowly lost interest as the episode continued, I became more and more fascinated by the situation. Bated breath? Yeah, pretty much. It was one of those shows that felt like a novel, it had substance and structure. I didn't immediately take to the hero, Graham Kelton, (an FBI man in charge of high-level missing persons cases), but by the end of the episode, mostly from his dialogue and his attitude, I liked him a lot. I really liked his partner, Lin Mei. I'm repeating the names in hope of remembering them.
It reminded me a little of Lost in that each character has a story or a secret, often an unexpected one.

I don't think I've ever seen Gale Harold before. Is there something I should know him from? He reminded me of Gary Sinese. I didn't like him at first, but he grew on me. Good character.
I just hope they don't end up drowning in their own mythology
Goodness, yes. There's a lot of trust involved in our expectations that these shows will be coherent and make sense in the end - especially when they are often cancelled in mid-cliffhanger. X-Files is a major example of a show that didn't deliver on its promises. I hope for a really fine story arc here.

Date: 2006-08-29 03:32 am (UTC)Gale was Brian Kinney on the US Queer As Folk for 5 years. So I'm used to seeing him naked and getting it on with other guys...which would greatly improve Vanished, I'm thinking.

Ah! I didn't even recognize him. But now you say it... yes.

Hmm, yes, it would certainly do no harm. I wouldn't mind at all.
