Happy birthday, blithe spirit...
Aug. 4th, 2006 09:27 amToday is a special day for me. It's August 4. 214 years ago today, Percy Bysshe Shelley was born. I have many historical and fictional heroes, but I can't thnk of anyone who has influenced me more.
I always try to think of a special way to celebrate his birthday. I consider holding a party, but would my friends want to celebrate the life of a man they've barely heard of? Lost in indecision on the matter, I always leave it too late to plan, and then think, "Maybe I'll do that next year."
I could watch one of the movies I have that features him, but sadly, none is quite good enough. Except maybe Rowing With the Wind, which has its oddities, but does well by Shelley, thanks to the talented Valentine Pelka. I think he appears in the wonderful episode of Highlander that slashes Methos with Lord Byron and Mary Shelley, but as I recall, Shelley himself is appalling in that one.
Maybe I'll just drink a toast to him. I'd drink to him in laudanum, if I had any.
It was an exciting year to be a Shelley-lover, as they've recently found a hitherto-unknown political poem he wrote when he was eighteen. But then, there is no bad year to be a Shelley-lover. This makes me reflect that I haven't read a new biography of him in ten or fifteen years, and I bet there are new ones out there.... I must have a look.
There's a Walter Jon Williams story

Date: 2006-08-04 04:38 pm (UTC)Hmm. Is that a hint?
Shelley/Byron or Shelley/Byron/Methos. I can't help liking it.
Especially since Shelley and Byron were of more or less opposite temperaments.... and Byron was just temperamental.
Hmm. Wandering away to think, now....

Date: 2006-08-04 05:57 pm (UTC)is that Methos' a wonderful thing.
He'd look great in a top made of rubber,
and his bottom is... interesting.
And he's bouncy, flouncy, pouncy, bouncy,
fun fun fun fun fun.
But the most wonderful thing about Methos is, there can be only one!
Methos is a cuddly fella,
Methos is awfully sweet.
Certain k'immortals are jealous, and that's why I repeat -
The wonderful thing about Methos.....
