There is, for the time being, another resident in my household. There's me, the three budgies, and now a little furry creature named Squeaker. She is said to be a guinea pig, but I'll swear she's a mutant tribble. She has the mutant power of mesmerizing people to sit cuddling and petting her (and feeding her bits of carrots) ad infinitim. She has already used her wicked wiles of cuteness on me and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi, to good effect.

Soft, too. Tan-brown fur with reddish patches. Bright red eyes with reflect the light so they look as if they're glowing, like Gambit. When I look at pictures of guinea pigs online, they don't seem to have red eyes. I knew it! A mutant tribble.

Awwww...

Very cute. Cuddled in my lap and purred - well, made tribble noises - while I was watching TV.

What fun! Please pet her for me! Also - what are the names of the birds? For nearly 14 years, we had a lovely green budgie called Magnus, who used to speak with my father's voice.

I will certainly do that.

what are the names of the birds?

The blue one is Logan.
The green one is Gambit.
The white one is Pryde.

<>For nearly 14 years, we had a lovely green budgie called Magnus, who used to speak with my father's voice.

Aww, how clever! And it fits my pattern of naming budgies after my favourite members of the X-Men - Magneto is often called Magnus.

Magnus was so named by Dad, who decided for some unfathomable reason (I suspect connected with reading George MacKay Brown) that he was a "Viking budgerigar".
We got him when I was 9, and he lived until I was a post-grad. He sang South of the Border, Down Mexico Way with a Rothesay accent, would play-fight with fingers, and ride on a miniature field-gun on wheels, which we would push along on the carpet on his 'out' excursions (with windows and doors closed and reflective surfaces covered, for safety). I wept for at least 2 hours when my parents wrote to tell me he'd died. (They couldn't bring themselves to do it over the phone, as my grandmother was visiting at the time and it would have upset her, as she had lost her budgie, too.)

How very cool! I picture him with a fierce horned helmet, like Asterix with feathers. (Yes, I know Asterix wasn't a Viking and I believe Vikings didn't wear horned helmets, but it's still a great image.)

ride on a miniature field-gun on wheels

Oh dear. Now my little guys want their own miniature field-gun. What is it with budgies and artillery? My budgies' favourite moment in television is when they bring out the cannon on Horatio Hornblower and Horatio (or Bush or someone) shouts "Fire!" and then BOOM. Much budgie joy every time.

Dad and I have been collaborators in imaginative weirdness from my infancy, when we used to copy the maps from Tolkien together. Mother, on the other hand, is scarily mundane...

What is it with budgies and artillery?

I didn't realise it was a common interest with them... What fun!

While in Australia, budgies used to be a popular source of food, though there can't be too many mouthfuls in a budgie.

There probably aren't many creatures who aren't good to eat.

Yes: the whole edible songbird thing seems too fiddly for me. Too much work for too little reward. I can't be bothered with chicken-wings for that reason.

A total sweetheart. So gentle! After rambunctious budgies, I'm not used to sweet-natured pets. Not that the budgies aren't adorable, you understand. Just... headstrong.

I am reminded of a quarter finished manuscript I have on file somewhere. It featured genetically engineered creatures of ultra cuteness, when you saw it you wanted to pet it and when you did it took over your brain (at least overcame your resistance and you were basically drugged and did everything you were sugested).

I don't trust cuteness, it is a devlish weapon!

Tried to phone to congratulate on Squeaky's arrival in household - is the internet connection on same line? Couldn't get through.

Ther shouldn't be a problem... no, the Internet is a cable connection. My phone seems fine. Odd!

Squeaky says "squeak" which I think means, "thanks for the thought"!

The problem was the BT exchange, I think - I got occasional messages that the "system was busy" and couldn't connect. However, once I did get through, it was delightful to talk! It's always good to find other people to fangirl over adorable mediæval types...!
And the birdlets sounded delightful!
Cuddles to Squeaky.

I've had that happen with international calls. I was delighted that you finally got through! I will certainly relay your cuddles to Squeaky when I get home tonight, she will appreciate it. The birdlets are proud to be (noisily) delightful.

We had custody of a pair while DW was teaching school. We loved them. They soon learned to associate the opening of the refrigerator door with the likelihood that they might get lots of veggies, so every time the refrigerator door opened they took care to remind us that they were there. Squeaky, I'm sure, is an appropriate name.

Yes, I am told that Squeaky reacts loudly to the sound of carrots being chopped. She is currently sleeping but I'm sure she'd wake up pretty fast if some carrot-chopping were to happen. I gave her spinach for supper and it disappeared surprisingly fast.
