This story struck me as very bizarre and funny. What was Houdini thinking? Did the warmth of the blanket make him think the blanket was alive? Or was he just being greedy? Why am I reminded of the 'cat blanket' in the Lois McMaster Bujold's novels? I suppose in this case, it should be a bunny blanket.

They have sharp pointy little teeth, hundreds of them, and if fabric with loops on it gets caught in their mouths, they don't have hands to pull them out again. The only option they have is to keep swallowing, it's that or choke on it.

Also, if you're feeding a snake and a towel or something gets caught in its mouth, it's a real fuck of a job to try and get it out again without pulling out their teeth or hurting the snake.

Snakes are not smart, they do things like that, but yeah, one bite on loopy fabric and they're in trouble, nothing they can do about it. It's not natural for a snake to be on fabric, and the owner should have it on a heated rock or something more sensible.

Poor Houdini!

Well, I'm really glad Houdini came out of it okay. I hadn't realized he couldn't just disengage when he'd started eating.... Poor guy.

I can't disengage when I've started eating, either! And if anyone tries to take food out of my mouth, they get hurt, too. I sympathise with the snake and his curvey little teeth ;D

I can - I've been known to spit things out if they're really bad. Preferable to throwing up, I figure.

And if anyone tries to take food out of my mouth, they get hurt, too.

I wouldn't recommend that anyone try it... Just how sharp are my teeth?

I certainly sympathize with the snake. All those little metallic bits... he's be a cyborg-snake.

Poor baby. I'm glad he's all right. I love snakes... just not with built-in heating features.

(As always... hey, nice icon.)

Glad you like the icon. (Heh. Me too.)

I'm always happy to see stories of snakes surviving against odds. I love snakes too.

Now you have me picture a happy Houdini with an interior heating system and an electrical plug sticking out of his tail for those chilly nights.

Houdini v. 2.0! Can snakes smirk? He would so go around and show all the other snakes and lord it over them. Or move somewhere ostentatious, like the northern reaches of Alaska or something.

("How come I never get any of that?" "Buy me a drink first." "..... such hard work." "But worth it!" Did I mention that I actually inhaled milk during that exchange? I totally did.)

A whole new subspecies - the Arctic Python! Coiled up with his own extension cord.

I believe you! I must confess it is a moment I like to listen to over and over.... Just one of those cute little favourites. Love the way the Doctor smiles there.

It's a nice concept! I'm pleased he's OK! I saw him on TV: a very fine snake.
