It should be such a great morning. I am reading a magnificent book, caught up in every word. It's hot but not too hot, not too humid, not raining - downright beautiful. I have the prospect of a writing party this afternoon, which I love. The budgies are singing and all's right with the world. Right?

All would be right with the world if a tooth hadn't broken right in half as I ate my breakfast of apple slices with peanut butter.

How demoralizing. Now I have to go to the dentist. I hate it when that happens.

Otherwise, it's a great morning.

poor you for the tooth,
I guess I must forgive you due to the pain and distraction. You didn't mention the title/author of the book!!!

LOL. The book is The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner. It's the third in a trilogy starting with The Thief (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060824972/qid=1153066990/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-4040926-5369441?s=books&v=glance&n=283155) and continuing with The Queen of Attolia and they must be read in order because, well, to say anything at all would be a spoiler. And these books are all three utterly brilliant. Stunningly so. Right up there with Dorothy Dunnett, Lois McMaster Bujold, Guy Gavriel Kay and Mary Doria Russell. (I pause to wonder why Dorothy Dunnett is the only one of the three with a double instead of a triple name, and recall that she occasionally used the name Dorothy Halliday Dunnett.)

Not only are the plots original, with brilliant twists, but Eugenides is an amazing protagonist, who, in this one, does not disappoint.

thanks.

You may remember that I've complained a bit about not being able to read (due to lack of concentration). As it happens, I read Lois McMaster Bujold's Spirit Ring in about 2 days during the hollidays. So maybe I just need a more gripping book (wich is not exactly the same as a better book) and different surroundings. I will keep this triology in mind and see if I can find it. (new book are unfortunately too expensive)

Yes, good luck on finding them. I got them all from the library, and I was on a waiting list for "The King of Attolia" for a long time.

Hmm. I've read The Thief - bought it, in fact, after enthusiastic recommendations by Dunnett people, and sad to say, I found it a bit meh. Shall have to dig it out and see whether maybe I was just in the wrong mood for it. Watch this space!

Did you read the novel right through? I loved the whole trilogy, though it would be fatal to read the books out of order. I loved Turner's style, and I thought Eugenides was remarkable.

See my comments now added for "The King of Attolia". If you didn't like "The Thief" you might not like the others - it's a matter of liking the author's style, and it's very subjective. She reminds me of Diana Wynne Jones crossed with Dorothy Dunnett.

And though I loved them all, I find that I've liked each book more than the previous one. In "The Thief" for example, I wasn't too fond of the myth-stories of the gods - we get fewer of those in the next books.

And I like the way Gen matures.

I wish I had a three name name...

D. A. Smith is pretty much what I've decided on.

I might go for E.M. Holden, though I think I prefer Elizabeth Holden. I don't much like my middle name, Margaret, so I don't think I'll use it....
Though I might if I had a one-syllable surname. But I don't. So... Elizabeth Holden it is.

Deborah Ann sounds silly and common. I like that D.A. Smith takes away my gender and makes it a little unique.

It could also be an official title, should you ever go into law as a career.

Haha, true. People always tell me to go into law. I don't know that it's my area, though.

I'm not sure but I think law would bore me comatose.

Ah, yes. Been there. Done that. Totally agree with the reaction :</

I will say, that in my experience, major repairs are more expensive and inconvenient for a longer time until completion, but mostly, they have held up considerably longer than minor repairs.

Good luck.

I'll hope for the best. Mostly my teeth are pretty good, so I don't feel I ought to complain too much. That doesn't stop me from feeling grumpy about it.

Ow! And hmph! How very annoying!

At least the Doctor looks suitably sympathetic. Or is he perhaps worrying about his own teeth? "Let's see, new new teeth, all there? Right, then."

PS I mean your icon, not mine. I don't think Nine's teeth ever get referred to. His ears, his nose, and his accent are all the subject of personal comments - but not, I think, his teeth. *g*

I need a Ten icon and dammit, that's mean dropping one of my current ones. I fear Ioan may get the chop...

Any good sites for Ten icons? You've had some extremely spiffy ones lately!

Date: 2006-07-16 11:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
No, I can't recall a comment on Nine's teeth. And he has fine teeth, obviously, suitable for nibbling things.

If Ioan gets the chop, I hope it's only temporary! I keep changing my icons - there are so many Doctor Who icons I love - I love the one I was using last week (Ten with 3-D classes) that I may go back to it.

I haven't been using just one site for my DW icons - in fact, I've been wasting entirely too much time browsing icon sites. Got a good number of them from [livejournal.com profile] dwicons.

Can you call today and set up an urgent appointment?

No, but I'll call first thing in the morning. Luckily it's more annoying than painful, so far. Though admittedly distressing. I am living on soups.

Was it an in tact tooth or something that had work done prior?

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
As far as I know the tooth was good, though I think it had a very old filling in it. I know the dentist mentioned something at one point about one of my teeth having a crack - I don't recall which one, so this might have been it.

I'm not happy about this. And even though I don't have to, at the moment, I'm living on liquids.

Sympathies: this kind of thing has happened to me before now. Last year I lost a wisdom tooth after part of it came away when I was cleaning my teeth... And it began the 20 year saga of how I eventually lost both front teeth after they first broke when I was 17.
