I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest this afternoon with Pat, Sandi, Beulah, Lyn, Cenk, John and Glen. A good time was had by all.

After the movie we went to the Royal Buffet for Chinese food for supper and talked about the movie. I love having friends who are willing and able to discuss a plot in detail. It was most enlightening, and we came up with speculative theories.

Norrington undercover

From worrying at the timeline - exactly how much time had passed since the last movie? - we came to the conclusion that Norrington did not lose his honour, his men, or his ship. We think Norrington is working undercover for the King in an attempt to root out the purposes of Lord Becket and the activities of Captain Jack Sparrow. His Scruffington identity is an act.

Heart, heart, who's got the heart?

Does Norrington give Davy Jones' heart to Becket at the end of the movie? We decided he does not, on the following clues:

(1) the bag seemed too small - it's thumb and its movement could be simulated
(2) we didn't actually see the contents of the bag
(3) there was no bag when it was last seen
(4) we didn't actually see Norrington take the heart from the jar

So who took the heart?

We didn't reach agreement on this, but my favourite theory (so far) is that Elizabeth got it. I would have to see the movie again to judge when/if she had the opportunity, but she was on the island, she witnessed the chest-opening, she was miffed with the men, and she has multiple motives. Moreover, if anyone in the whole movie could be described as a stealer of hearts, it's Elizabeth Swann. (On a metalevel it's Johnny Depp who is the stealer of hearts.)

What, then, did Elizabeth do with the heart? Stashed it somewhere? On the Pearl, perhaps?

Who will Elizabeth end up with?

For reasons relating to plot structure, I think it will be Will Turner. I wish it would be Captain Jack Sparrow. I'd be happy if she ended with Norrington. Or all of them.

But I liked Sandi's answer best: She'll reject all of them, and take command of the Black Pearl instead.

What role will Sparrow's father play in the plot?

If saving Bootstrap Bill's soul from Davy Jones is Will Turner's goal, then perhaps saving his own father from a terrible fate is/was Captain Jack Sparrow's motivation. Perhaps the deal he made with Davy Jones (purpose still unclear) had to do with his father's fate. Perhaps his father set the whole thing in motion.

I love all the speculation! I hadn't thought of Norrington's scruffy bit being an act... hmmm... All I know is that I oddly found him more attractive as a drunk than as a commodore. Ah well. I think that Will and Jack and Liz should all ride off into the sunset together. But I also think Nine and Rose and Jack should do the same, and it never does work out that way, does it? :)

If you're interested in roleplaying, Chad and I are restarting a game we began after the last flick, and you can find it here (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheTrojanDres).

I found him attractive as both, because I like Jack Davenport's looks, especially his wonderful voice. On first viewing of Curse of the Black Pearl I hardly noticed him; on subsequent viewings he grew on me.

Now, as a drunk I find him more interesting, which is another matter entirely.

I also think Nine and Rose and Jack should do the same

Well, so they should. I like to think that in some alternate universe Captain Jack got to the Tardis on time, back in A Parting of the Ways, and they are still exploring Time and Space and each other quite happily.

Thanks for the link; I'll have a look.

Personally, I can't abide the thought of scruffy!Norrington being just an act-- that would turn him right back into Commodore and therefore unattractive to me. I mean, yes, it would be a good twist plot wise, and I could probably handle it with only minor complaints, but damn if scruffy!Norrington wasn't one of my favourite characters, in part because he'd fallen so far.

Hmm. You found the Commodore unattractive? And the difference between an act and reality would make all the difference? I can understand that, thought I like Norrington either way. I also love Norrington's fall.

Well, no, not entirely, because he does have a pretty awesome nose and I am therefore powerless to resist, but just not in the same way. I can imagine chilling with the Commodore and him being pretty awesome underneath it all, but scruffy!Norrington is awesome on the surface, y'know? Also, the black hair helps a lot.

Indeed. Nose and voice. No wonder I am his abject slave.

scruffy!Norrington is awesome on the surface, y'know?

True. For various reasons he reminds me of one of my great heroes of all time, Sydney Carton.

Also, the black hair helps a lot.

Does no harm, indeed.

(Now basking in the Norrington love.)

Keep an eye open for good clues. Let me know if you think Elizabeth could at any point on that island have had access to the heart.

OMG, the Logan/Veronica kiss!!

Which one? What did you just see?

Well, a number of kisses now (lol) but the first initial one at the hotel (when Logan comes to 'rescue' her and punches the shit out of the FBI agent) was FAB. I giggled for about ten minutes, it was so unexpected, and I so wanted to be her.

Now they've kissed a few times, including making out in the bathroom. I really like Logan, dammit.

I like Logan too. A lot. I may have mentioned this. So does Veronica, poor girl.
