A good day today: Michael Rosenbaum's birthday. (Picture borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] acampbell's delightful screencaps.)

It isn't the scripts, the directing, or the producers, who have made Lex Luthor the magnificent Smallville character he is. It's a true symbiosis of character creation and an actor's talent. Rosenbaum one of the gods of my pantheon for his powerful (but subtly complex) depiction of Lex. This makes him a sex god, of course, but that's the best kind.

Happy birthday, Michael Rosenbaum. Have a wonderful year.

And, you know, the awesome thing about Rosenbaum is-- he's so pretty, even with a shaved head, such a soft-looking creature, and the character is all angles, from what I've seen. For some reason the juxtaposition (and he does it very well) is striking to me... normally characters reflect their inner selves pretty visually, but he doesn't, and he doesn't just pull it off, he makes it an interesting point.

Yes. This is one of many reasons that I am so impressed by his talent. He makes Lex Luthor his in a way no other actor could. They could do their own versions, probably good versions - but only one man can give it the Rosenbaum interpretation. Visually and in terms of character both, Lex is softness and strength, power and weakness, confidence and vulnerability, melded together in a convincing paradox. It's mostly Rosenbaum's doing - put another man in the role and it would be entirely different.
