I got this one from [livejournal.com profile] sparklebutch: Which Immortal in Highlander are you?

Unsurprisingly, I got the one who is so much my favourite character that he ruined all the others for me. Who is one of my favourite characters of all time. I still think he was underused....

You scored as Methos. You are Methos. You are non-confrontational, mysterious, and secretive. You often act on impulse, evading and avoiding others as much as you can, but are willing to align yourself with someone if they can help your chances of survival in any given situation.

Which Highlander immortal character are you?

Now, this leads me to think: what other Immortal characters do I love? Many. Even if you exclude a few people who might be immortal, though it hasn't been proved yet, like Wolverine, Nick Fury, and Magneto. My list, in no particular order:

1. Doctor Who (Nine)
2. Doctor Who (Ten)
3. Xas (from The Vintner's Luck by Elizabeth Knox)
4. Methos (of course)
5. Dream (whether he is actually immortal or not is a moot question, since he changed from Morpheus to Daniel... so presumably it's the role, not the individual, who is truly immortal. Yet he is still one of the Endless, still a sibling to the others... Hmm. This reference, of course, is to the comic The Sandman by Neil Gaiman)
6. Desire, also from The Sandman by Neil Gaiman - Dream's sister-brother
7. I'm tempted to say Shakespeare, because he's called the Immortal Bard, but I won't
8. Oberon or Auberon, King of Faerie (spelling depending on source - Gaiman or Shakespeare? Or other?)
9. Simon, the vampire in The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause

Any others? I must be missing some....

Well, Kronos is amazing, but he isn't one of my favourites, except inasmuch as he is in the immediate orbit of Methos and therefore partakes of his glory. I like Kronos when you write him, but I think you make him more interesting than the TV show did, so it doesn't entirely count. There were a few other Immortals in Highlander that I really loved, like the one played by Nigel Terry, but I don't even remember his name now... And Gregor, I liked him. (Auspicious name, since I also like Emperor Gregor in the Vorkosigan novels.)

What, no Spike nor Angel from Buffy?

You're probably going to be shocked, but I've only seen bits and pieces of either Angel or Buffy - not enough to hold an opinion for either of them. I don't like David Boreanaz at all, which is mainly why I don't watch those shows; I do think Spike is magnificent but I've only seen him in bits and pieces and it isn't enough to pretend I know the character.

I keep planning, if the opportunity arises, to simply sit down and watch both shows: I expect I will like it when I do. But the opportunity really hasn't come up and there are so many other good things to watch instead.

I think there might be other characters on these shows that you will like; I also think that if you watch enough, you will come to see the sparks of genius in the writing.

But that's just an opinion.

You're probably right. If at any point I get a chance to see it, I will.

St-Germain, in the series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro; and Vlad Dracul in Saberhagen's version. Both vamps.

Then there's the Howard Families, especially Lazarus Long.

But the best, I still think, is Roger Zelazny's Conrad Nomikos. "...And Call Me Conrad", aka This Immortal, tied for the 1966 Hugo with Dune.

Eeek! My least favourite immortal in Highlander. I won't hold it against you.

I thought of saying St-Germain. He isn't as much of a favourite as those already mentioned - and I haven't real all the St-Germain books - but I sure do have good memories of Blood Games and Hotel Transylvania. But I don't find Yarbro a great stylist, so I have reservations....

Hmm, I didn't think of Lazarus Long. Perhaps because I don't remember him so much as a character, than as a series of aphorisms - ?

Haven't read Zelazny. Should I take this as a recommendation?

It is not Zelazny's best work as a novel. As a serial in F&SF, it tied Dune; with 8,000 more words as a standalone it did not work quite so well. But Conrad himself is clever, resourceful, witty, and probably nummy if I Swung That Way.

All kinds of people love Roger's work; he does evince a certain fascination with the idea of immortality. I just wish he'd been a little more than mortal himself.

Okay, you're describing my kind of hero. I'll read it. (Making note to self.)

Zelazny has been recommeded to me many times, and I think I own at least one of his books. Just haven't got round to reading it.
