Doctor Who: The Doctor Dances...
Jun. 12th, 2006 08:56 pmAfter doing yoga I gave myself time to watch the next episode of Doctor Who, The Doctor Dances, the second part of the story begun in The Empty Child, to see how the story ends - and to see Captain Jack again - and it was even better than I hoped.
I found myself memorizing Jackisms, like "Love the T-shirt!" and "A bit of a blur after that. I woke up in bed with both my executioners. Lovely couple."
That, and the dancing theme.
That, and the Doctor's determined non-violence.
That, and the darkness of the story, and his happy, plot-rich resolution. I loved the way plot-details fit together, not just as plot but as theme. Loved the dance theme. Loved Jack's dialogue.
Ahh, happy day.
I had a nice walk home with
At lunchtime, I went for a walk with Lisa by the river. It was beautiful, reflecting blue sky. Neither of us wanted to go back to work. We did. Such noble, dutiful souls. Or maybe just too aware of the need to pay the rent and mortgage.
The only disappointment was that I didn't get to see Charles. The snake. He's appearing in the play that's in rehearsal right now at my theatre, Talking With. Something of a departure for us, because it's a new professional company doing it in our space. There's a section with a kitten - a very cute young kitten, so young I think it's just learned to walk and explore. I meet it in the Green Room periodically.
The snake stays in the rehearsal hall, and I want to meet him. But the first time I went by this morning, he hadn't arrived yet; after that, the door was closed and rehearsal was on; the next time I went downstairs, the snake and his keeper had 'just left'. Maybe tomorrow!

Captain Jack is on his ship, wear his American pilot's uniform. The ship is about to explode - there's a bomb on it. He's talking to his computer, who tells him he has three minutes to live, probability of escape 0%, probability of death, 100%.
"Oh, well," he says. "There's only one thing to do, then." And he calls up a vodka martini, musing aloud to the computer as he sips. "I made a mistake last time this happened - made it a triple vodka. A bit of a blur after that. I woke up with both my execitioners. Lovely couple." He pauses a moment, remembering, as he sips his drink. "They kept in touch after that. Not everyone does that."
It's a beautiul blend of surreality, campiness, sexiness, cleverness, and mind-bending silliness. It creates its own wacky reality.

Date: 2006-06-13 01:23 pm (UTC)I discovered it as an adult, sinec Doctor Who just wasn't being shown in Canada... not when I was young, anyway. And as an adult, I just was not impressed by the Pertwee/Troughton/McCoy episodes I was shown.
I'm glad that's changed!
