...But I got Paris instead.

You Belong in Paris

You enjoy all that life has to offer, and you can appreciate the fine tastes and sites of Paris.
You're the perfect person to wander the streets of Paris aimlessly, enjoying architecture and a crepe.

I haven't been to Paris in thirty years. I never knew it well, but it holds good memories.

Memories of Paris: the geraniums in the pots on Madame's balcony in Medun; going to a lecture on the Pleiades at the Sorbonne where the seats are uncomfortable and I wished I could stay forever; the street pastries; the sunshine over Sacre-Coeur; the bookshops along the Seine; Bill playing the guitar at the foot of my bed in the mornings; the statue of St. Bathildis in the Luxembourg Gardens; the unicorns in the Musee de Cluny; the liveliness of the place.

It has nice hostorical and fictional resonances, too. Peter Abelard and Henri III; Highlander and Francis Crawford.

Oh, yeah. I was there for a week in Summer 1972 ... most of which I spent in a meeting-hall on the Rue du Faubourg St-Denis.

But I remember: walking across the Ile de la Cite at midnight, and realising that the building I could reach out and touch was Notre- dame de Paris. the Eiffel Tower in the distance. the petanque players in the Tuileries. Sigh.

The memory of Paris at night is particularly magical. The way dusk coats the city.... And then there are all the lights in the darkness, all reflecting in the water.
