I got this interesting "genderlabeling" site from [livejournal.com profile] sparklebutch. The interesting thing about it was that I was only familiar with a small proportion of the words on the list - and I don't think of myself as naive, or having a small vocabulary. Heck, I even thought I was mildly au courant with gender issues. Shows what I know! I should have been able to figure out "eonist", if I'd thought for a bit.

Hello

Too bad they didn't have an option for 'obsessive about history' or 'bibliophile', which probably describe me better than gender-oriented words.

They had a costumising option where you can add your own... Plus there are other "card" sites that aren't gender specific :)

Yeah - if I had time, I'd've done a pile of customising! Just have to think up more interesting words....

I once did a thing like this in an apazine, not gender-specific but all sorts of things - politics and philosophy and so on - and I got taken to task for saying I was various things that end in "-ist" (pantheist, monarchist, anarchist, feminist, etc.) - some people seemed to think these words in themselves were offensive, regardless of their meaning. I had some trouble with that concept. They were perfectly happy if I said I believed in anarchy, monarchy (but not monarchism), and so on. Feminy but not feminism? Erk.

Some people don't like opinions. Isms mean opinions.

I've ran across people who had issues with the way you express youself; they often seem to think that the more letters, the more you're trying to call them stupid. They *are* stupid, but that's not the point. Some words just don't come in short form.

Yes - or the short forms of the words don't express enough meaning, they leave out the subtle shades. Or they just aren't exact enough.

You may be right about opinions, there. Some people don't like opinions. Other people only like opinions if they are their own.

It seems like people don't mind if you believe "in something" or are a "part of" that something, but the second you become that something, then they're all in a huff.

You can believe in monarchy, but can't be a monarchist? Um, yeah...that makes sense.

I think you've got it pegged.

Makes no sense to me. The interesting observating... the slightly frightening observations... is how intense people can be about this, how overwrought they can become. Yet it's all just words and ideas; usually more how you say it, than what you are saying.
