Why do I like this so much? It's probably all Neil Gaiman's fault.
On the other hand, I don't recognize myself in that description of Death. Pessimistic? No more so than your average Little Orphan Annie. Cynical? Naw, I'm with Oscar Wilde: A cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
