Nicholas Cage...
Oct. 5th, 2005 01:30 pmIt's on all the news feeds that Nicholas Cage has named his new son Kal-El.
I love this. Nicholas Cage just went way up in my estimation - I love Kryptonian names. Amazing how many people have them, at least in my part of the world, if you just listen to the words and don't worry about the spelling. I know people named Jo-El, Dani-El, Chant-El... And sometimes think of myself as El-Izabeth.
Acutally, I always thought that if I had a girl I'd name her Kara.
I know it goes against popular thought these days but I think people are way, way too conservative in naming their children.

I noticed in the article on the subject in the Ottawa Citizen, the clueless idiot said that Kal-El was a Kryptonite name, not Kryptonian. Oh well.

Date: 2005-10-06 10:10 pm (UTC)The ex and I were into religion then, and I found my daughter's name in the bible, Damaris. Which was great until years later when we found out it was Greek for 'heifer'. And THAT was even greater, the source of mass amounts of merriment.
I named my son Sterling because I was homesick for Colorado. Neither of them mind their given names, but being stuck with the last name of their bio-father kind of irked them, as it looks simple on the surface but seems to be impossible for 3/4 of the population to correctly pronounce. :/

"Damaris" is pretty. As for 'heifer'.... There's a heifer theme in the Lymond novels, where he calls the woman he secretly lives 'heifer' in Russian (yunitsa) but doesn't tell her it's an endearment.
Is there a Sterling in Colorado? I have great memories of Sterling Castle, in Scotland. Another good name.
What's the hard-to-pronounce name? I come across many of those, including the odd variations on Smith. But "McKay" is the worst.

Date: 2005-10-08 04:24 am (UTC)The name is LaLoge. Common variations are La-LO-gey, La LOZE, La Log and my favorite, LaLarge.
There is more than one reason I went back to my maiden name after the divorce.

I always kept my birth-name, it made life so much simpler.
