Too busy to stop to think...
Sep. 20th, 2005 10:24 pmBut not, all in all, a bad day or even a stressful one. Well... the hour I spent in the box office learning the new ticketing software was pretty stressful. It isn't really new software but it's new to me.
After work I went with Lil, her mother, and their friend Pat (who is really named Agnes) to St. Hubert's on St. Laurent for a chicken dinner. A great time was had by all. Lil gave me a lovely birthday present - a hardcover copy of the Alan Moore graphic novel Promethea. Beautiful.
Then, getting home, I had to make the beef stew for the Lost party tomorrow and so some vacuuming because I have way too much pride to let my friends see all the feathers and seed on the carpet, except in the corner by the bird cages, where it's natural (and inevitable).
Another thought on The Punisher from last night.... It had a scene that is thematically one of my favourite fictional situations. Call it unexpected heroism. Not on the part of Frank Castle - we expect heroism from a hero. But from Dave and his friend, Frank's neighbours along with Joan - the Rebecca Romijn-Stamos character. Frank has been badly beaten by a villain, and while he's still unconscious, more gangsters come to kill him. Dave, Joan and friend hide Frank. The villains - especially the guy ina suit whom I thought of as a Dominic Senatori look-alike - torture Dave. Now, Dave is a wimpy, geeky type without much personal strength, but he doesn't say a thing to the thugs and they finally stop hurting him because they're sure such a dorky guy would be too frightened to defy them. Later, Frank asks Dave why he didn't talk. Dave says it's because they're friends.
I like that: heroism from the guy you don't expect it from. It's one of my favourite themes - shades of Sidney Carton.
