Civilisation is our specialty. What really pleases me is that.... the Constitution promises equality to all under the the law - and then with an Act like this, it actually delivers. I think that's more important than what it means even in human happiness - the clear message that gays and straights are equal under the law.
I heard that on the news and I was I bit surprised -- thought we'd already passed it long ago. But then again, I'm not watching the news frequently lately.
You're right, of course. The issue is not dead and won't be for a long time. One of the politicians interviewed was actually talking about "sin" and "decadence" on the news last night. It felt like a time warp to Victorian times.
I hate the way Harper is trying to appeal to religious conservatives of all type - including gatherings where the (veiled) women can't sit in the same hall as the men. I find that scary; shades of "The Handmaid's Tale". There are certain things I want Canada to espouse as societal values, and other things that appall me. Has Harper no sense at all? Is he living in another world, or another century?
It is very sad to me, how the red Tories were completely driven out of the new "reformed conservatives". The last major one of course was Brenda Stronach. This infiltration and subversion of the Conservatives by the religious right is scary. With any luck, the Conservatives will come to their senses and toss Harper out. I doubt it, but we'll see.
I can see it going one of two ways - that the Conservatives get more and more right-wing until they make themselves unviable and get voted out, which has happened before; or they see sense and get a more moderate leader, and gain some credibility again.
The fundamentalist angle is both disgusting and frightening.
