Seems that when I wasn't looking yesterday, the government fell. Huh. Or maybe not. Maybe they just seriously wobbled. The Toronto Star predicts there'll be an election called within the week. What a waste of time.

Sometimes I really hate democracy.

Don't blame you, but I can't help thinking that if we had that kind of flexibility, we'd have a better chance of getting rid of Dubya.

I suppose that's a point, and of course all the Conservative/Reform party people are rubbing their palms and thinking the same thing. I'm not a huge fan of Prime Minister Paul Martin, but I like him better than the man who's doing his best to chop down the government with a rusty axe and break it into little pieces. He's sort of a Canadian version of Dubya - right-wing absurdities politely phrased.

I know, it will all happen whether I approve or not. I certainly don't want to have a corrupt Prime Minister, but Paul Martin himself isn't accused of corruption - it's a taint hanging over his party.

Why don't they use Parliament to discuss issues regarding the welfare of the country? Isn't that their job?

Grumble.

Same reason the two houses of Congress don't down here, methinks. Why should they? We don't pay their campaign bills.

Yeah, such flexibility could have gotten Clinton dumped too, but I'm thinking that accountability has some effect on job performance. Not that he was perfect, but when he was in office, more things that actually helped the bulk of the country got done. The way our system is, the officeholder is pretty well insulated against public opinion unless it's an election year.

All of this makes me all the more depressed and cynical about the efficacy of democracy, when so much time, effort, and taxes go to things ancillary to the actual running of the country or sorting out its direction or caring about its welfare.

If there is an election, I might even go so far as to help someone campaign. I'd hate to see Stephen Harper get into a position of real power.

My Member of Parliament is a wonderful guy. I'd hate to see his position jeopardized. But he's neither Conservative nor Liberal.

Our requests for absentee ballots went in the mail on Monday. If I was in the country I'd be seriously thinking about working for a campaign as well.

Yup. Let's see if I can indenture myself to Ed Broadbent as his willing slave or something - though he is popular enough in Ottawa Centre that I have no great fear he will lose his seat. Still. You never know.

If it does come to an election it looks as though it may be a really nasty campaign.

Ed announced a week or two that he would not be running in our riding. His wife is ill and I sort of got the idea that he doesn't much like the way politics are running right now.

Aargh! I didn't know. That is bad news. Wonder who I'll have to indenture myself to.

I noticed that. Quick off the mark, aren't they? That's good. Hmm. See, if I vote Green and a Conservative gets in, in our riding... I'll feel responsible. But that wouldn't happen, would it?

Would it?

What a lovely icon you have!

I fear it would, so I guess we'd best not waste votes.

And thanks! Yours is very lovely too - my favourite flower, in fact.

It's my favourite flower too. (Even more than primrose now.) Makes me want to keep this icon forever.
