The calendar in my bathroom is the 2005 Smallville calendar, a much-appreciated birthday gift.

Some months - months with a picture of Lana Lang - I cover over the picture with a picture of Lex or Clark from last year's calendar.

Today, I turned the page over to May a day early because I like the picture so much. Yes, it's Lex.

..... That man does pleasurable things to my stomach and I haven't even seen him in action yet. Something about the eyes, I suspect. Few things as delicious as an intensely focussed gaze, eh?

Lex Luthor

Focussed gaze, yes. I love the way Michael Rosenbaum characterizes Lex: a lot of it implies thought and unspoken feelings, so it's quite subtle - you have a sense of action within the man's psyche that is never articuated or shown. He feels, but hides his feelings - though not all of them. He doesn't stop thinking. It's delightful.

And yes, good eyes.

... on-screen, high-calibre antiheroes are very rare creatures. Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia; Mal in Firefly.... Spike in Buffy, to a certain extent... can you think of any others?

Methos in Highlander. Let me think about this. There must be other good ones!

...y'know, I've never seen the Highlander TV show? I've seen the movie. The one with Sean Connery. And I laughed hysterically throughout.... but never the show.

The Highlander movies were awful, except the last one, which was only half-awful.

The Highlander TV show ranged from okay to superb. I loved it from the beginning because of its use of history - each episode showed scenes from Duncan MacLeod's past, somewhere between 1600 and the present, in places all over the world. Good stories. Not the best television ever, but above average.

Then in the middle of third season we were introduced to the oldest Immortal in the world, Methos, and from that point on as far as I was concerned, it was The Methos Show. Only Methos wasn't in all the episode, and I was disappointed when he didn't appear - the stakes had risen for the entire rest of the series. Fans called him the Really Old Guy, ROG for short. He was played by Peter Wingfield, who has a wonderful voice.

Methos' past was chequered, so to speak. A wonderful character.

The time has come!

Too bad there isn't an all-Lex calendar for me. A few years ago [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi had a Tom Welling calendar, which she has now given to me. Very pretty! even if it's a few years out of date now.
