Oh no...

I was just going to settle down and watch last night's Smallville and discovered that the video-tape didn't work. I didn't tape a thing. And I have enjoyed the last couple of episodes so much, I was all hyped in anticpating this one. Damn, damn, damn. It'll be shown again on the Canadian channel, but not till Tuesday.

I'm consoling myself by watched the Smallville episode that's being shown tonight on the French station - it's Visitor. I like that one, but it isn't the same as seeing something new.

Grump.

Yeah, if you like it that much, I need to see this thing.

I like it that much. Warning: not all the episodes are good. Not that it's always clever or cohesive. But the good things about it are so good.... I'm willing to overlook the lapses.

Lana Lang is problematic.

Lana Lang is problematic.

That seems to be a universal complaint, judging by my other friends. Let me put it this way.... is it on a par with Buffy, or below that level? Have you ever even seen Buffy? (If not, I recommend it. The same sort of thing could be said-- Villian of the Week doesn't always work out, depending on who's writing/directing the show that week quality fluctuates, but the good moments are so darn good that it makes up for it.)

I have seen Buffy, though only a few scattered episodes - I'm told I really have to see it in order. Smallville is not like Buffy at all, I'm not sure how to compare it. Smallville is moody and colourful, not witty and clever. Less scope. More.... flavour. That's not describing it well. In objective terms, Buffy is likely the better show, but I'm speaking from second-hand impressions.

Makes perfect sense.

Hmm - I thought I'd answered this, but I guess not.

I've been trying to think of a better word for the quality I like so much about Smallville; not exactly its sense of style, although it does have one, reminiscent of the old comics but not a copy of them - a lot of it has to do with colour. It's a sense of myth... a sense of the story they are building on, the old Superman story that they are twisting out of shape and poking and playing with, for various effects.

Your icon is so appropriate. I almost kicked my VCR when I saw it hadn't taped anything! Useless machine.

Which one is Visitor? You know, I have the hardest time keeping track of episode names, unless it's something obvious, like Ryan or Krypto.

It's the one where there's a geeky kid with a science bent, who believes he's from outer space - and Clark is thinking that he's maybe also from Krypton. Remember that?

Isn't that the one where Lana wears pink and complains a lot?

In contrast to... which one?
