Serenity: the trailer...
Apr. 26th, 2005 11:20 pmHere: http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/serenity/.
I've watched it a few dozen times now, and showed it to my friends, and downloaded it, and watched it in slow motion, frame by frame.... Wow! (157 days to go till it opens.)
Interestingly, the trailer makes it look a little too full of chases and explosions, maybe just because these are now requisite for trailers, or because they're trying to get a wider audience and think that chases and explosions might just be the thing. And they might be. The rest of us, who are madly in love with the Firefly crew, will watch anyway.
I found and liked the synopsis of the movie on the Internet Movie Database.
I have a dozen comments, which I'll put under a cut because there will be spoilers.
(1) We hardly glimpse Kaylee - I guess they wanted to keep the trailer uncomplicated
(2) We don't see Book at all, so I was relieved to see him in the pictures in the 'gallery' section of the site. Is he elsewhere doing something monkly? Or something covert? Patti predicts he will turn up when we least expect him - working for the Alliance. I think he'll turn up when we least expect him, *not* working for the Alliance. (But for someone else, perhaps?)
(3) Scary, scary Reavers. With scary, scary weapons.
(4) I like the planet of the shiny towers. Reminds me of the rich estate that one of Saffron's husbands lived in.
(5) River as Spider-Man. Cool.
(6) Everyone is just *so* in character, even in such brief scenes.
(7) Is that Simon in an Alliance uniform? Did he go in himself to rescue River? That whole scene is fascinating - some sort of lab or medical room, River bound in a chair, Simon with a fancy sceptre that he puts into a gadget with a rotating light, an energy field or wormhole or something comes down on them... It sure looks as if it could be River's escape from the people who were experimenting on her, in which case Simon was lying when he said he had other people get her. (But why shouldn't he lie about it?)
(8) The whole trailer has an amazing narrative to it. It sets up situation and character. It focuses on the central plot thread, the pursuit of River (with a nod to attacking Reavers). It sets up River as an innocent young victim, then segues into her development as superpowered fighting machine.
(9) I love the way it ends - "I am unarmed." "Good." Blam!
(10) Love the shot of Mal going down into a space station (or something?) on chains.
(11) Zoe is just so gorgeous.
(12) Mal's suspenders are the best things ever.

Date: 2005-04-27 06:06 am (UTC)Book isn't necessarily "away" anywhere -- he just isn't in any chase scenes (that they wanted to put in the trailer -- goodness knows his part in the gunplay is full of energy for us fans, but it's an understated, in-character, intense energy, not a rock-em-sock-em energy).
The scene of Simon rescuing River -- why do you think it had to have been a flashback to when he rescued her the first time? Hmm!
Agreed with (11) Zoe is just so gorgeous.
If I hadn't dropped by your LJ today, I wouldn't have known the trailer was out... glad I did. So, how many days to go? ;-]
Re: (spoilers herein)
Date: 2005-04-27 11:53 am (UTC)It might be that River is recaptured and has to be rescued again. We shall see! But I like the idea that Simon rescued River personally the first time round.
Zoe... swoon.
156 days to go now till the movie.

Date: 2005-04-27 12:58 pm (UTC)Book! Super sekrit! I'm telling ya! ;)
Mal's expression in the very last shot is smirk-tacular. That's my antihero.

Date: 2005-04-28 03:07 am (UTC)How could they sideline Kaylee? I think she has a low profile in the trailer because they wanted to show action scenes and she tends to not be in those. Just as well.
Yeah, I think you're right about Book. He's up to something.
Mal's smirk is a precious and wonderful thing.
