[livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and I ate lunch outdoors at Kettleman's Bagels. I just had coffee, because I'm on the South Beach Diet - had lunch afterwards, indoors. It wasn't quite warm enough but it wasn't so cold I was uncomfortable, either. Sunny. Hope of sping in the air.

Went to the Ottawa Science Fiction Society meeting to hear StarWolf talk about anime. I'd seen most of the stuff he was talking about, and when I asked him to explain the storyline of Gundam Wing I still didn't get it. He showed a bit of Area 88, which I have always loved - [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi tells me the story was never finished and we never do learn whether Shin gets out of that place. Huh.

After supper I was tired and watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - I saw it in a movie theatre but fell asleep in the middle, so I wanted to see the bits I'd missed. It turned out I hadn't missed much... just part of the climax. As before, I thought it was slashy, I didn't like Polly (who had the worst characteristics of the old-style Lois Lane: sneaky, opportunistic and dishonest), though she had some funny lines. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi agreed with me that it was very slashy and pronounced it utterly gay. The best character was Angelina Jolie's Frankie - both in concept and execution.

Nice art, too. So derivative of comic books - in some cases I could name issues of comics which had that very scene, or perhaps a shared source.

I totally agree that Polly/Gwyneth Paltrow was utterly unappealing in Sky Captain, and that Angelina Jolie's Frankie was terrific. Didn't find the movie even remotely slashy, though.

Visually, a real treat, I agree.

Yes. It's a pity the story didn't have more punch; the dialogue was fine and the acting was good, but the story was uninvolving. The slashiness was mostly in the dialogue.
