From The War of Art by Steven Pressfield:
Self-doubt can be an ally. This is because it serves as an indicator of aspiration. It reflects love, love of something we dream of doing, and desire, desire to do it. If you find yourself asking yourself (and your firends), "Am I really a writer? Am I really an artist?" chances are you are.

The counterfeit innovator is wildly self-confident. The real one is scared to death.

On a related note, did you see this post (http://www.livejournal.com/community/crumpeteers/cutid1) quoting C S Forester on writing?

I found his views very encouraging. When you see someone else's finished work, it's too easy to assume that the process was painless and that no one else has crises of confidence. And that it requires a measure of deliberate hard work to produce anything at all.
