Jul. 9th, 2004 07:51 amBeulah came over and we talked about irises. Then we watched the Smallville episode 'phoenix". It's a while since I'd seen it. A few impressions:
- Lex had a harder edge than I remembered - less vulnerable, more angry. Angry with everyone but Clark.
- When Martha said to Clark that no one blamed him for the baby's death, I assume that means she didn't know that Jonathan blamed him for the baby's death.
- Lex was so good to the Kents in this episode - gave them a farm in a way that didn't harm their pride; made his affection for them clear. And yet they never show him much trust or kindness through the whole season. Poor Lex!
- Lionel seemed more benign, less dangerous and threatening than I have come to think of him. His actions to Lex, before "Shattered", are much more ambiguous and could be interpreted (with allowance for Lione's character) as fatherly.
- Lana Lang seemed more annoying than ever; when I first saw this I was just happy with her because she and Clark seemed to be breaking up. This time - no. She's still a weepy and self-absorbed selfish brat. Her most amazing line is when she says that whether she and Clark are together or not is 'her decision'. Not entirely!
- The reunion between Lex and Clark is still the best moment of the episode.
- A adore Rutger Hauer as Morgan Edge. I wish he'd stayed - a magnificent villain.
- Lana's use of martial arts against the thugs just doesn't ring true. Not unless she has a split personality.
- Chloe is wonderful.
- Clark is cute. There was even a split second where I liked him as red!Clark, though in general I don't like red!Clark at all.
- Nice flannel.

Date: 2004-07-09 05:18 am (UTC)Heh, I think Clark is adorable but I suppose that isn't a surprise *g*. As for red!Clark, he has no morals at all but I still like him.
I haven't watched Phoenix in a long while something I intend to remedy very soon.

Date: 2004-07-09 06:07 am (UTC)I recommend it!
I don't like red!Clark but it isn't because he has no morals - in other cases, I like heroes without morals. But this is Clark... or isn't Clark... in any case, though I can't entirely explain it, I find him creepy and not sexy at all. Not even when he's with Lex - though Lex is adorably sexy in those scene! While I think the normal Clark is adorable and very sexy. Ah well, that's okay, there are only a few episodes with red!Clark and plenty with real!Clark.

Date: 2004-07-10 06:23 pm (UTC)I always wondered if Jonathan leveled with Martha over the summer (or ever, for that matter) about how he treated Clark at the hospital before Clark ran away. I love that scene because Jonathan's reaction is entirely human, and, as we've often been told, Clark's parents aren't supposed to be perfect, but after he had time to cool down, he owed Clark a whopping big apology, IMO.
And yet they never show him much trust or kindness through the whole season. Poor Lex!
This still mystifies me, because, really, all they'd need to show us is a couple of moments of the Kents treating Lex as a person with feelings and needs, and it would do a lot to mitigate the impression that's been built up of them continually meeting him with unrelenting suspicion and distrust. It looks bad for them to keep accepting favors at his hands and continue to treat him this way.
Nice flannel.
Alas, I love the black shirt. I was a bit cast down to see the flannel come back, even if it did keep changing colors!
