Unsurprisingly, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was my favourite of the Harry Potter movies so far. For one thing, it's my favourite of the books. For another, the young actors are maturing in skill and personality and I liked them more. The director, Alfonso Cuaron, had just the right tough - it wasn't cute or sweet. Oh, yes, I was happy with this one. Including with Rickman as Snape. (I was amused to see The Ottawa Citizen this morning call him Professor Snipe, though the review was otherwise good.
On the whole I approved of the things they changed from the book, though there was one detail - Snape giving the potion to Lupin - that I missed. And given the nature of some of the slash I have been reading about Lupin, David Thewlis was disappointingly sexless. Unsexy. Too bad. And if I'm going to be really picky, I missed the moment when Harry gave his name to Shunpike as Neville Longbottom, which for some reason always struck me as hilariously funny.
The Weasley twins were all they should be. Emma Thompson as Professor Trelawney was simply fun, and I liked Michael Gambon as Dumbledore more than I liked Richard Harris in the role.
And the set - the cinematography, the sound and the music, the composition of the scenes - I thought it was all far, far better than in the previous movies. The setting, the rocks and trees and architecture were superb. And, mercifully, no long scenes of quidditch games.
