A great day to be a fan. A bunch of really good fannish things happened... I bought the Season 2 <a href="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001JXPPC.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" target="blank"Smallville
DVD set, and I'm thrilled to have it. Not only does it have some of my favourite episodes like Redux, Prodigal, and Rosetta, it has the wonderful Chloe Chronicles. It has more stuff I haven't even explored. And it cost less than I expected, leaving me a few dollars more for the comics that came out this week.
The library came up with two wonderful hardcover graphic novels I've been looking forward to: Orbiter by Warren Ellis and Colleen Doran, and Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. The latter is among the best work in comic books ever, in my opinion. I don't know yet what Orbiter is like but Warren Ellis is an amazing writer - sometimes good, sometimes not, but witty and inventive, and Colleen Doran... well, I could write a major essay on Colleen Doran without really concluding anything about her art, but I like it.
Add to that the comics which actually came out this month. The new X-Men comic that I most look forward to is Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon, and it won't come out till next week, but we did get New X-Men Academy X and Excalibur - or do I mean eXcalibur? And a whole new Grendel series by Matt Wagner (who does Grendel better than anyone, no surprise) teamed with one of my favourite artists, Tim Sale, whose art reminds me of Matt Wagner's in the first place. That's just the new series - there were new comics in some of my favourite ongoing titles, like Superman/Batman and Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man.
It's great to feel excited about comics again.

Date: 2004-05-20 04:28 am (UTC)This isn't that Excalibur. It's by Chris Claremont. Here's what it says in the Marvel listings:
"THE STORY: pt 1 The island of Genosha was once a thriving nation of mutants, built from the ground up by Magneto, the mutant Master of Magnetism. Then, one day, an apocalyptic attack killed every man, woman and child, and reduced an entire society to rubble within hours. Now, Professor Charles Xavier – legendary founder of the X-Men, and the man who dreams of peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants – has come to Genosha with one intention: to rebuild a nation from its ashes. This brand-new X-MEN: RELOAD series features stories and art from the creative team that brought you X-TREME X-MEN! 32 PGS."
That's from http://www.marvel.com/comics/onsale/onsale.htm?id=468.
I don't expect Warren Ellis quality but it might be interesting.
