30 Days of Marvel, Day 1: The first comic that got you hooked on Marvel

Fantastic Four #18: "The Return of the Super-Skrull"

“The Return of the Super-Skrull” by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #18: the comic that sparked a lifelong passion.

I found it by chance at Leo's Confectionary at the corner of Clare and Kirkwood, browsing for something to read. I already read DC comics on an occasional basis. This didn't have characters I recognized, but it looked interesting.

    It was.

If I hadn't been already hooked by that story (and I was), I was hooked when, shortly later, I read The Amazing Spider-Man #4, "Nothing Can Stop the Sandman". And then Fantastic Four #19 was a story set in Ancient Egypt - I was doomed by then.

Yup, addicted from a young age.

Day 2: Why do you love Marvel?

    1. Because of the great and diverse characters
    2. Because of the humour
    3. Because of the action
    4. Because of the relationships
    5. Because it’s great science fiction and fantasy - I love the innovations and nature of the Marvel Universe, with its things like adamantium, the negative zone, repulsor rays, gamma rays, red Hulks, healing factors, webbing, the Shi’ar Empire, Canadian superheroes, mutant nations, and Skrulls.
    6. Because of occasional breathtaking art
    7. Becuase of occasional brilliant stories
    8. Because it’s a lifelong habit
    9. Because there are gay and bi characters
    10. Because Marvel makes Wednesdays exciting

Yogurt...

I did something today I've never done before: I made yogurt.

Everyone has told me it's easy, but I'd never done it. And I did it the extra-easy way: I have a yogurt-making machine, which I bought in the Great Glebe Garage Sale last year, but hadn't yet used.

I figured it was time.

So I read the instructions, and set it up this morning, and now, 9 hours later - allowing an hour for the yogurt to cool - I have some rather delicious yogurt to eat. Plain and unadulterated.

And I could add fruit to it, too. Or cinnamon and stevia. Or... whatever I want.

I am delighted with this. Yum.
