Comments on fanfic...
Jul. 8th, 2011 03:29 pmOne thing Lev Grossman's article did was get people talking about fanfic, at least within fandom. Which is a good thing; I think we should do it more often.
Fans seem to be much less defensive about fanfic these days, and that's good in many ways. In the distant past, we didn't need to be defensive because we were so hidden: if you knew about us, you were one of us. And woe betide anyone who betrayed the secrets of the sanctum to the outside world.
Then it became an open secret, an island of both pride and paranoia surrounded by either indifference or hostility. And now... well. It's an open secret with less shame and less paranoia necessary.
Pim sent me a link to a discussion of the Grossman article on Metafilter. I found myself wanting to comment on their comments, ( so here I am. )
John Barrowman, the Doctor...
Jul. 8th, 2011 04:55 pmOn July 5, John Barrowman was given an honorary doctorate in music by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in his home town of Glasgow.

Love it that he wore his kilt.
I think this is wonderful, and I can't help thinking it transforms the Captain into the Doctor, putting a whole new spin on 'The Doctor and I'.
My old sink...
Jul. 8th, 2011 06:36 pmWhile I was dropping off my recycling today, I noticed my old bathroom sink sitting all alone on the apartment building's basement floor. I recognized it by the pattern of damage. This made me instantly sentimental about it, enough to take a photo. When I took a picture of my new sink, I wished I had a "before" picture to go with the "after" picture I posted.
So here it is.
Though I love the new sink, I find that the water I get from the tap tastes... funny. Not really bad, but odd, and not as pleasant as I was used to from the old tap. I suspect this means that the new tap has better filters.
Pity.
