From The Toronto Star
During an Olympic week in which the U.S. press insisted on talking about Canadians with the same paternalistic bemusement a Canadian zoo visitor would convey when talking about an especially adorable monkey – "look at all those funny little Canadians in their funny little hats," Canada-born Slate writer Dahlia Lithwick sighed in summary – none of our customs was more appealingly adorable to idea-starved American reporters than curling.

Clearly they haven't seen that wonderful movie, Men With Brooms. I remember it came as a surprise to me - I don't know my age at the time - that the rest of the world wasn't into curling all winter. Not that I had any interest in curling, any more than any other sport. But it was there. Always. All the boys I knew played hockey. Just about everyone else curled, including my best friend.

"The curling capital is Canada..." It's all a mystery to me. But one I rather like, on principle.
