fajrdrako: ([Misc] - 03)

Just got back from the beautiful wedding of [personal profile] commodorified, [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze, [personal profile] random and [personal profile] fairestcat. I found it very moving, and it gave me hope for the world to see people so happy and so able to build their lives as they wish them to be. [personal profile] fairestcat looked stunning, and [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze was gorgeous.

I had a great time talking to [livejournal.com profile] jsburbidge and [livejournal.com profile] bunsen_h, whom I don't get to see nearly enough any more. And it was a treat to see Robin (does she have a livejournal?), whom I haven't seen since she moved away from town eleven years ago.

So I ate and talked and even danced, though it was John Barrowman's Anything Goes that got me up and dancing.

The wedding was so beautifully them that it had a warmth and sincerity you seldom see. I wish them every happiness.

And I wish [livejournal.com profile] xinef good health.

What do you do with a Torchwood novel that comes out after Children of Earth? When you've done the grim, dark side of the story, destroyed the setting, and sent your hero offworld in existential despair, what's left?

Comedy.

It's one of the new Torchwood novels: Risk Assessment by James Goss. He's the one who wrote Almost Perfect, the story in which Ianto was turned into a girl.

It is, if I day say so, cute. Delightfully cute. It's set after the deaths of Owen and Tosh, but before Children of Earth, when the Hub still existed. Alien coffins are coming through the Rift and alien invasion of Earth seems immanent, when along comes Miss Agnes Havisham, an agent sent through time by Queen Victoria herself, to handle Torchwood in crisis. She has the power to pull the plug on Captain Jack if she wants to - and it's clear she isn't impressed with his slipshod ways.

It all turns out quite steampunk.

I might prefer my Torchwood stories to have more substance, but while waiting for that, this one was fun.
