Last night I watched the first episode of the second season of True Blood with [livejournal.com profile] explodedteabag and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru. They like the show and I just don't really see the attraction. Well, Bill, maybe. I just find myself... uninterested.

I find this case very interesting. It raises all sorts of questions in my mind: what is the differentiation between a church, a cult, and a scam? is this reminiscent of the selling of indulgences in the pre-Reformation middle ages? Should the state allow more leeway when the subject is a religion? or should it be extra vigilent? to what extent is a religion that is based in one country deserving of toleration or suspicion when it moves beyond national borders?

And most important: How does this threaten (or bolster) freedom of thought?

Again, a press piece mostly devoid of information, if you skip the spoiler parts. Which I did - and that was a bit of a trick.

But I liked the 'raising the stakes' issue - though I think the stakes were already very high in "Sleeper" and "Cyberwoman". No problem. What I like most is the implication that Russell T Davies is interested enough to stick with Torchwood in future, which implies there is a future.

I like the phrase, "Captain Jack and his very private secretary, Ianto".

Tonight [personal profile] commodorified, [personal profile] random, [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze, and [livejournal.com profile] auriaephiala came over for a fannish evening - first night in a while, due to their various travels.

We talked a lot, and ate a lot - t seemed like a particularly good feast tonight: shrimp, cauliflower, bean salad, potato salad, green salad, rice salad, grapes, apricots, and ice cream - and I'm no doubt forgetting a dish or two. We watched two episodes of Leverage: "The Wedding Job" and "The Mile High Job". I think "The Wedding Job" might be the most intricate plot yet, and a favourite. Parker in a pink bridesmaid's dress was a hoot, but the best scene was Eliot's knife fight in the kitchen.
