FERN HILL by Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs
About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green,
The night above the dingle starry,
Time let me hail and climb
Golden in the heydays of his eyes,
And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns
And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves
Trail with daisies and barley
Down the rivers of the windfall light.

And as I was green and carefree )

I've never done a silent retreat, but I'd like to. I've been seriously thinking about it. Or... some sort of retreat.

I like to talk, but on a limited basis (timespan established beforehand) I can't imagine I'd have a problem with it. Though some people laugh when I say so, I'm really a quiet person.

Mind you, the point of a silent retreat is not to do it because it's easy. The point is to do it anyway, easy or difficult.

  • Yesterday was Apaplexy collation at Sheila and Harry's place. No one was late, the collation was done in double-quick time, and a good time was had by all.

  • I went over to Sheila and Harry's place early to show them Doctor Who: The Planet of the Dead and to have supper with Sheila. It's a shame to see Harry so sick, but he enjoyed the show and I think he enjoyed seeing everyone at the collation. His breathing is very laboured now.

  • Today, I went with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru to a shop we like on Bank Street, East Wind. I bought a pile of clothes. I never do that. But I did because they had clothes such as I've always dreamed of having, and because I could. I am going to be the best-dressed woman in Ottawa.

  • Today I also got everything ready for my tax return. Gad, how I hate doing that. Subconscious resentments - ? Or maybe conscious ones. Couldn't find my T4 for a long time. Found a huge pile of papers to file. Tomorrow.

  • Had supper with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru - corned beef and cabbage, with strawberry jello for dessert. We both loved it. Sheer pleasure food. Then we watched part of a documentary movie about The Hittites - it's a Turkish movie, how cool is that? We'd have watched it all if I hadn't been feeling remiss about Revenue Canada. I was delighted that [livejournal.com profile] maaseru was willing to watch it with me - even wanted to - said it was interesting to see something about a different set of people. She recognized Jeremy Irons' voice as the narrator right off - I'd like to think I would have, too, but I already knew he did the voice-over.
