Strange Day...
Feb. 14th, 2007 10:07 pmIt started with going to the dentist. Well, actually, it started with doing my exercises. Then I went to the dentist. Since I usually have my annual dental appointment in January or February, it's usually a bitterly cold trip out to Carling Ave. Today it wasn't particularly cold - hardly warm, mind you, but not as cold as it often is - but it snowed all day. Miraculously, the buses were exactly on time and I got there early. I took a bus I'd never used before, the #101. Looks as if it replaced the old #99.
So: Dr. Barnes. He's been my dentist since I was 16. It was his birthday today, and he was in a good mood. He said several times that my gums are healthier than they've ever been. All that flossing paid off.
But I have a chipped tooth, and two cracked teeth, so there's more trips to the dentist in my near future, with the bills that go with it.
In the early afternoon the power went off at work. You could hear the screams of horror from each room as our computers and lights turned off. They stayed off for an hour. Boring. Sitting around in the almost-dark, trying to read or write. At lunchtime I'd written a Torchwood story; I hadn't saved it because I don't want to save fanfic on my hard drive at work. So... story gone. I hope I can rewrite it. If not, not.
An hour later the lights came on again and everyone's computer was fine - but mine. My computer no longer had a working copy of Windows on it. So I phoned our member of the Board of Directors in charge of the computers, and he talked me through the reinstallation of Windows. I ended up working an hour overtime just to get Windows back and running along with the various passwords and securities I need to access the server.
By the time I left work it was 5:30, and because it had been snowing all day, the traffic downtown was immobile. I know from experience that taking the bus home on a snowy day can take two or three hours; even slowed down by walking through snow it doesn't usually take me more than an hour or 90 minutes to walk home. So I walked. Good exercise. Pretty but tiring. The best part was when I walk through part of the park near Patterson Inlet; the street lights cast shadows on the snow and the the trees were all covered in fluffy white snow, dark pine branches underneath.
Home. Made supper. Alayne came over and we watched two Doctor Who episodes, and some bits: "The Christmas Invasion", "New Earth", and the 'bits' were the outtakes, the bloopers, and "Children in Need". Love the new DVD set.
A long and strange day, but not a bad one. Just odd.
