Don Juan DeMarco....
Oct. 28th, 2003 10:15 pmI saw the first half of Don Juan DeMarco this evening. Would have seen it all, except that I wanted to see Carnivale at nine, and did so.
Don Juan DeMarco is good. Whether it is just 'good' or something better, I'll have to judge when I get to the end - at a few points I thought it was ascending into something quite wonderful, but it so far hasn't quite come through.
Johnny Depp is remarkable as always. I love the way so much of the story is based on Lord Byron - and that got me wondering what Byron's sources were, aside from his own imagination.
Basically it's a story about the dissonance between romance and mundane life, so pronounced when people lose their dreams. I imagine the movie comes down in favour of dreams - most do - quite rightly, too.
