Don Juan DeMarco....

I saw the first half of Don Juan DeMarco this evening. Would have seen it all, except that I wanted to see Carnivale at nine, and did so.

Don Juan DeMarco is good. Whether it is just 'good' or something better, I'll have to judge when I get to the end - at a few points I thought it was ascending into something quite wonderful, but it so far hasn't quite come through.

Johnny Depp is remarkable as always. I love the way so much of the story is based on Lord Byron - and that got me wondering what Byron's sources were, aside from his own imagination.

Basically it's a story about the dissonance between romance and mundane life, so pronounced when people lose their dreams. I imagine the movie comes down in favour of dreams - most do - quite rightly, too.

I really enjoyed it, and I wasn't sure I would. I think it's well done. I'd be interested to know your opinion when you see the whole thing.

Don Juan is a legendary figure who has counterparts in many cultures, and someone like Byron could have found his inspiration in any of many obscure areas and works, but the earliest known dramatization (1630) of the tale is El Burlador de Sevilla by Tirso de Molina (pseudonym of Gabriel Tellez). Byron could well also have been influenced by Moliere's Le Festin de Pierre (1665) and by Mozart's opera, Don Giovanni(1787).
