[livejournal.com profile] dargie had an interesting topic just now. What would be the ideal day? She focussed on actually what would be an ideal hour in any day - and I can only agree with her.

But. The ideal day.

Some friends and I have been getting together regularly to discuss our lives, our philosophies, the universe and everything, in the interests of - well, sorting our lives out better. One exercise from one of the books we were studying was to describe (as if scheduling it) our ideal working day.

It was so easy I was almost embarrassed.

The question of course is, how do I get there? Not so easy, or I'd be there already. But I'm closer than I used to be.

The most interesting things was the way [livejournal.com profile] sanj voiced the second part of the question: Would your ideal life consist of an endless string of these ideal days?

I'd never asked myself quite that question, and the answer was as easy as the "ideal typical day" scenario - No. I don't want an endless stream of ideal days that are always the same, wonderful though that day would be. Will be. No, I want a "typical working day" that would be similar most days because I'd be doing what I want to do, but I don't want that to be invariable. I want variety and I want the unexpected too - I guess that's what weekends are for. Currently my weekends seem to be packed with errands and tasks - that isn't what I want, either. I want some days off visiting museums in places like Athens and Tokyo. I want some days spent wandering in the Gatineau Hills - insert name of any good natural walking area - the cliffs of Cornwall? The coast of Brittany? And others spent laying Trivial Pursuit and/or Scrabble, and others in long idyllic bouts of sex. I want options.

The worst part for me is, I *had* what was probably, for me, the best of all possible working days. I had a job I had created, with one staffperson I adored and another I liked, and I was good at the job and mostly liked what I did. For the first time, evah.

Then, about 10 months ago, I got pushed out of that job, and into one I don't like at ALL. Isn't that always the way?

That sounds frustrating - and sad! I bet the person who has it now isn't doing it as well, either. Maybe it's a challenge by fate to create another perfect job? It would be nice if it could all be simpler.

Actually, my one consolation is the person who is doing it is the employee I loved (and trained) and she's doing the absolute best that could possibly be done, given she has one less staffperson than I had.

Well, that is a consolation but it still sounds like Murphy's Law in effect!

Wait... dargie?! That would be the same dargie (mother) of Marzipan, no? All the Dunnetteers have become LJ-ers!!

Yes, you guessed it. The Queen Mother of Marzipan herself. One of my favourite people. Isn't it great who you'll come across here?

Obviously - not at all! I do meet the young here, but there are people of all ages.
