Smallville: Velocity...
Feb. 12th, 2004 08:04 amI watched Velocity before going to work, curled up with my comforter in the living room.
An amazing thing: an episode about Pete Ross that I actually liked.
- Lex was wonderful. I loved his conversations with Clark, along the unspoken lines of "I know what you did and why and you know I know...." (Of course, Lex is always wonderful and I don't mean to imply otherwise....)
- I liked the way everyone else thought promises were meant to be broken and secrets to be told - except Clark, who was conistent about not breaking promises and not telling other people's secrets.
- Blaming hmself for Jonathan's heart attack is a new height of guilt-complex for Clark. Who drove him to put on the ring in the first place, hmm? I still think he should feel more guilty about the laws he broke in Metropolis than the strain he put on his father, but I think he'll come to that.
- I like the way Lex approved Clark doing "anything for a friend" and Clark resented Pete for putting him in that position.
- I like it that Lex refused to give the money to Clark for Pete's sake; why do I suspect that if it had been Clark himself in trouble, he might have given it to him, and then tried to solve the problem himself? Of course, he knows giving money to an extortionist is futile.
- I liked the sheriff's dialogue with Clark.
- I continue to like Adam, and enjoy his scenes. Too bad we didn't get a scene between him and Lex this week.
- I love the way Lex used the situation to acquire the services of Dr. Tang. He's collecting quite a coterie of biophysical experts - a cut above Dr. Hamilton, too.
- I love seeing Clark walking into Lex's mansion and Lex walking into Clark's barn. More of that, please.
- I adore Chloe. Just on general principles. I'd like to think Pete told her about his troubles afterwards.
Off to work now. The budgies are singing up a storm as I write. I hope it's another relatively mild day for good walking.

Otherwise, I was generally UNimpressed with this episode. I have never liked Pete Ross and this ep. just made me like him less. I didn't have enough sympathy for his character to really root for Clark to commit illegal/immoral activity for him. Lex, yes. Chloe, yes. Pete? No. The only part about it that I liked was the end of the episode, where we see their friendship truly tested and Clark really drawing away from Pete. After all of that, I think it's about time.
And I think we can pretty much rule out Adam being Bruce Wayne by now, hahaha.
Re: bad friendships
Date: 2004-02-12 03:47 pm (UTC)It's all part of the hero-complex, which I so like. "The world will take care of itself for a while without your hand on the rim." But things fall apart, and the heroes have to put them together again, and agonize when they fail.
I have never liked Pete Ross and this ep. just made me like him less.
This was something I liked - that I liked him less. See, I so loved Pete Ross in the old comic (when he was smart and heroic) and have so disliked the Pete Ross of the TV show from the beginning, that I felt a little guilty for my resentment. In this episode he was such a brat, such a fool, and such a manipulative bastard (taking advantage of not only his friendship with Clark, but with Clark's friendship with Lex) that I felt I was being given free reign to dislike him. Not that my attitude changed, but it was a liberating feel - "see, see, I was right about Pete after all?" I loved it that Clark couldn't forgive and forget in the end; I undestood and sympathized with Clark's attempts to do what his friend needed even when it was against his conscience. (Not that I approved of what Clark did.)
And I think we can pretty much rule out Adam being Bruce Wayne by now, hahaha.
He's clearly not Bruce Wayne, but I find him quite fascinating and I'm convinced he's really good. (I man, of course, be wrong.)
I am also as convinced as ever that Lex is wonderful!
