X-Treme X-Men #39

I hear X-treme X-Men is being cancelled and reborn as a new Excalibur. Does this mean a return to the old Excalibur characters and settings? Kitty Pryde and Pete Wisdom? No, with my luck, it'll be a reversion to the days when I found Excalibur well-nigh unreadable. If I'm lucky, it will have nothing to do with the old series.

I like Chris Claremont's writing (on the whole) but I haven't been reading X-treme X-Men, and this comic made me realize why, and why the X-comics have been interesting me less than they used to. It's because we aren't getting the X-Men as the team that I have known and loved for forty years: it's like a series of solo stories, where some of the X-Men turn up and have an adventure, or maybe only one of them. Whether the focus of the adventure is a character I like (or love) is unpredictable. The result is that the stories don't mean much to me - they seem superficial and unconvincing, and this story in particular seemed fairly pointless.

In this last part of Arena, Storm is fighting in the gladiatorial arena with great success. The set-up reminded me of the Mojo universe, though Storm's owner is Masque, currently a pretty blonde female. Storm's friend and rival in the arena is Callisto. Through a series of bondage/domination images and some wrestling parody, we get a story about the triumph of friendship over hardship, which ends in a hot tub. My favourite line: Masque is trying to bribe Callisto not to hurt her. "I'll restore your arms! Callisto, I'll make you perfect!"

"I am perfect," says Callisto. "But you, precious... you could use a little work."

I always liked Callisto.
