Smallville #6...
Jan. 25th, 2004 11:28 amFirst, Smallville #6 features an interview with John Schneider, with a fine photo of him. His favourite episode is Rogue, where Jonathan goes to jail. Some of his comments are predictable: he sees Jonathan Kent as a "real dad", and says, "The kind of father I am on SMALLVILLE is exactly the kind of father I am at home." With fewer platitudes, I hope. To hear him talk you'd think he wrote the dialogue. He refers to Jonathan as "a hero". Another interesting comment: "I... think one of these days we'll find out that Lionel, in his own twisted way, is doing his best as well. He just has an entirely different approach to it - 'The world is bad, so I have to teach you how to take the first shot' - and he creates a very evil young man."
But Lex isn't evil yet. Doesn't that sound just like Jonathan, judging Lex when he is so far innocent? As for the "different approach" to parenting, I would agree that sleeping with your son's girlfriend and sending the son pictures of the event, or giving him electric shock treatments to wipe his memory, could be described as ... different. My impression is that John Schneider is missing the point.
The first story, ID, fills in action between Exile and Shattered We get what happened when the plane went down, Lex's arrival on the island, and, after his return to Smallville, the continuing presence of Louis in his mind, as he tells the whole story to Dr. Claire Foster. Clark breaks up with Lana again. I very much liked the art by Tom Derenick.
I hated the second story, Magic. Basically , Pete uses deceptions to impress (or seduce) local girls, with help from Clark to make him look like a hero. I was offended by Pete's chauvenistic and dishonest attitude and even more offended that Clark would help him. The art by Kano was simply awful. I'd rather forget the whole thing.
At the end: an episode guide for the last few episodes of season 1. What's the point of giving episode guides almost two years out of date? And they lack the thing I most want to see - a cast list.
