I need dance music. Does anyone have suggestions?

One of the exercises I am doing from the book Simple Steps is to dance every day. Kitchen dancing, they call it. For this, I need music that makes me want to get up and dance. I'm finding different things, but as a lifelong non-dancer I really don't know what to try. In the past week I've tried ABBA, Zydeco, a song from A Chorus Line and Red Hot Chili Pepper's "Higher Ground".

So who else has musical suggestions for me?

the ones doing it for me right now are "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, and "Going Nuclear" and I don't remember who that one is by, but it is on the Smallville soundtrack, which is what I'm listening to. "Island in the Sun" is addictive too, cause it's got kind of a little caribbean be-bop to it.

Anything with a Caribbean connection has been dear to my heart since this summer and my happy infatuation with Captain Jack Sparrow. Thanks! IT sounds like just what I'm looking for.

Not sure what sort of music you usually listen to, but I'd suggest something like trance or techno - usually have a very obvious bass and rhythm, making it easier to dance to. Something like 'Epicentre' or 'Fearless' by VNV Nation, maybe.

If you love Sarah McLachlan, try "Sarah McLachlan Remixed" for exercising, these are dance versions of her lovely music. I prefer this version of Angel so much that I don't bother listening to the much slower original version anymore. Sounds too draggy to me now! I got my CD on eBay from Hong Kong, patted myself on the back for finding such a rare jewel, and was astonished to find it at Costco a month later. ;)

01. Fear (Hybrid's Super Collider Mix)
02. Sweet Surrender (DJ Tiesto Mix)
03. Angel (Dusted Remix)
04. I Love You (BT Mix)
05. Silence (DJ Tiesto's in Search of Sunrise Remix)
06. Black (William Orbit Mix)
07. Possession (Rabbit In The Moon Mix)
08. Hold On (BT Mix)
09. Plenty (Fade Mix)

"sin", "head like a hole" and "down in it" by nine inch nails (all on 'pretty hate machine'); "Animal" and "Communique" by Prick. Pretty much anything my Pop Will Eat Itself and Die Warzau.

Okay, okay, I have a weird idea of what makes a good dance tune! :P

Those suggestions sound really intriguing. I'm looking for things that are different and interesting and it sounds as if they fit the bill. I'll try them. Thanks!

Oh, thought of another one: "Pride" by Robert Palmer, the album and the song. The song is quite Caribbean-flavored, down to the steel drums. The other great dance song on the album is "You Are in My System" - it's got an excellent groove. The album as a whole is dance-y but can also be mellow (he had one of the smoothest voices ever). It was recorded in Nassau, so even when it's not overtly island-ish, there's a bit of the vibe. :)

Now, I love Robert Palmer, but I haven't thought of him in years. Very good suggestion. Haven't heard that album though, so I'll go and look for it.

How about New England Contra dancing/Southern Square Dance music? Or, Quebecois clogging/step dancing? How about the fiddling stylings of Canada's own Natalie MacMaster? J. Strauss waltzs? Morris dance? Texas two-step/swing (i.e. Johnny Gimble) I love Argentine tango too...
