Batman: the Long Halloween
Jan. 17th, 2004 08:35 amI've talked before about how much I like the work of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. I just finished reading The Long Halloween and my admiration knows no bounds.
This is the way I like Batman: alwyas thinking (but feeling too). Dark, dedicated, and still human. And a fine murder mystery plot too, including the process that turns Harvey Dent into Two-Face. I was astounded and delighted when the identity of the Holiday killer was revealed - not someone I'd guessed. Beautifully done.
Favourite images: Page 305, Batman standing on the edge of a roof, Jim Gordon standing with his back to Batman, standing in Batman's shadow, saying, "You know what needs to be done."
Page 271-272: Catwoman flirting with Batman, who turns her down. "Your loss," she purrs. "No," he says to himself, when she is gone. "The price of independence."
Alfred on the witness stand, giving evidence about Dr. Thomas Wayne and his family.
Oh, how good a good comic can be!
This is in the 'young adult' section of the library, and I can't think why. It's an adult a read as I've ever come across, in maturity and artistry.
