It seems to me bizarre that the U.S. courts are once again examining the gay marriage question and the Defense of Marriage Act.

It seems bizarre that a nation built on equality for all should make laws denying equality to gays.

Something wrong with the logic.

Oh, dear. You're laboring under the delusion that we USians are a logical people, aren't you? That foundation you speak of included slavery and women basically being chattel, remember. We've come a long way since then, but still.

We here in Washington state had to put gay marriage, which should be a basic civil right and not subject to popular opinion, to a vote this year after the bigots got enough signatures to put a referendum on the ballot challenging the law passed in the legislature earlier in the year. Fortunately, the bigots didn't have enough votes for a majority to overturn it [eg].

But we've got a long, long, long way to go to complete equality, believe me.
