I read a comic I loved. Best of the week. Best of the month. No, not even that. Best of the year. Can't think how long it's been since I read a comic I loved so much.

It's Hawkeye #2.

It's one of those comics where the writing is great, but the art makes it even better. I was never a big Hawkeye fan, for many reasons, and now I adore the man. And he's joined with my favourite of the Young Avengers, Kate Bishop - called Hawkeye herself - and Clint Barton loves and appreciates her just as much as I do.



I love the different sized panels. I love it that no two pages have the same layout. I love the way the story unfolds, reminding us of Clint's past as we read a story about the present. I love the way it uses action and character.

Matt Fraction is brilliant. Or at least, he's brilliant here.

Comic books at their finest, I tell you.

That is well done. I admire artists who can make good use of the space in creative and meaningful ways. Like that bit you posted: one large panel to set the full scene with body language, then tight focus on the dialog to maximize text.

I like all of that: it's very expressive, both minimalist and complete. And I like the way it handles movement is small, almost delicate pieces.

Indeed, the tiny details and delicacy intrigued me also. So expressive, so much packed between the lines.

I LOVED Hawkeye #2 so much. I'm just absolutely adoring the book so far. This is Fraction at the top of his form writing-wise.

And I love the incredibly strong and distinctive art. It reminds me of Gillen's run on Journey Into Mystery, and of the art in Captain Marvel, which I'm coming to enjoy more with each issue. They're all books where the art and the story just work together so well and make them stand out from what's around them.

While in Turkey I was reading some comics drawn by David Aja - back issues of Iron Fist - and in them, too, the art was magnificent. The man is brilliant.
