At the Rideau Centre food court they have waste disposal containers that talk to you. You throw in your paper plates and old napkins and it says, "Thank you for your assistance" in two official languages. I think this is absurd. I don't need trash bins to talk to me, thank you all the same.

Today I was about to throw away my paper plate and old napkin, waiting for the young man in front of me to do the same, when the container thanked him. To my surprise, he replied to it: "No problem."

I would assume he doesn't always talk to garbage cans, just the ones that speak to him first.

Now, that's good manners. A little excessive, I think, even for a Canadian.

Is it? Oh, dear. Maybe I'm being gauche. Maybe I can thank the box in Esperanto, for a little practice....

Yeah, go and treat yourself. I bet the kids would get a kick out of it. They could talk to the trash bin, too.

There used to be at least one talking Coke machine at Michigan State University. Freaked me out, first time it talked to me!

Did you ever see the "talking mailbox" segment on Candid Camera?

Talking mailbox... You know, I saw a lot of Candid Camera once upon a time, but don't remember any of the gags. I might have seen it. What did the mailbox say?

It would call out to passersby and say stuff like, "Hey, have you seen the mailman? 'Cause he's supposed to be coming by to empty me, and he's late," etc.

This was back when the series was in b/w. When it was GOOD! I still enjoy the new ones, but not as much.

I didn't ever see the new one. Mind you, there were numerous shows that I didn't know whether they were in colour or not because we had a black and white TV.
