[livejournal.com profile] dewline sent me a link to this interview with Chris Hedges about the American economy. I like it that he cited John Ralston Saul.

What's wrong with being left-wing? And why is it any better to call someone a nutbar than a crackpot?

Seems to me they were talking as if Canada were untroubled by recession. Huh. Seems to me that I, and millions of people like me, are struggling to find a job while the government and businesses respond to their economic problems by laying off more people. Something is wrong there.

Nowadays, recession is a mathematical point - not an abstract phenomenon.
It's not recession until it hits the magic number (which I hope you won't).
The PR of economy - the label makes it so much worse.

Not imaginary, but a social convention. Hence it's power.

Just like faith. The power stems from the combined social coordination rather than from whether the belief itself is in something real or imaginary.
