Talking to Queen's Park...
May. 5th, 2011 03:00 pmI sent this letter to my Ontario M.P.P. Nasir Yaqvi:
- As a person who does not drive and who does not have a driver's licence, I often find myself struggling to find acceptable ID, especially in official situations. I carry my passport with me at all times, but often it is not sufficient. When I went to vote in the recent federal election, I had to go home to get my hospital card - because it had my address on it. Yet often health cards are not accepted, either.
I know some States in the US have State-issued cards for on-drivers which serve as ID.
Please, please, can we get such a thing in Ontario? I so often feel like a second-class citizen, not having a driver's license!
This morning I got this encouraging reply:
- Good morning
I just wanted to let you know we have received your email and can understand your concerns.
The Ministry is in the process of creating a non driver license that can be used for I.D. purposes. We don't have a confirmed date as to when this will be available. It is definitely a long process and it is my understanding they are getting close to completing it.
I hope this helps a little bit at least to let you know we are aware of the problem and working to solve it.
But I find myself wondering why it is a long process - I mean, I've wanted this for decades. I wonder when they started it.
