The 30 Days of Torchwood meme:

Day 14: Favourite Couple

The couples I wanted really didn't exist. For one thing, I wanted more about Jack coupling. He got more action in the novels. In Torchwood, except for Ianto, we only got hints of Jack's past lovers. My favourite relationship is that of Jack and the Doctor - there were only a few oblique references to it in Torchwood, and I'm thankful we got them. I would have liked Jack/Tosh (and did love their private moments together); Jack/Gwen; Gwen/Toshiko; and Jack/any number of other people. Jack/Captain Jack Harkness was wonderful, but can I call them a couple? Yes, I can - for the space of one dance.

    Other couples I liked:

    1. Jack and Estelle:

A glimpse into his past. I loved it that he still loved Estelle. I loved it that she had someone to talk to about fairies, someone to hold her when she died. I loved it that she wasn't a Torchwood agent, or and alien. I loved it that her itme with Jack was the happiest time of her life.

    2. Owen and Diane:

This relationship did so much to humanize Owen. Just as Captain Jack Harkness was the perfect lover for Jack, Diane seemed perfect for Owen.

    3. Rhys and Gwen:

Quite wonderful together. I adored Rhys. I liked the way he and Gwen made their relationship work, despite all the difficulties; and the way they truly loved each other in a way Jack didn't diminish, even though Gwen loved Jack, too.

Relationships that didn't work so well for me:

    1. Toshiko with her crush on Owen in most of series 2. I've already ranted about this, a little. I hated what it did to both of them.

    2. Toshiko and Tommy in "To The Last Man". It was all so blatantly doomed from the beginning. So ... unequal.

    3. Owen and his fiancée in "Fragments". There was nothing wrong with either of them, or with the story. It's just that... I don't know who that man was, but it certainly wasn't Owen.

    4. Jack and Ianto never seemed like a couple to me. I wanted them too, but there always seemed to be something missing.

    A few further observations:

    1. I liked the relationship between the unhappy mother and the horrible stepfather in "Small Worlds". It seemed very real.

    2. I wish things had worked out for Toshiko and Mary.

    3. Ianto's 4-month (or however long it was) relationship with a Cyberwoman was particularly interesting. Doomed, of course, but interesting. I admire his loyalty and his courage. I'd love to have seen it more detail, especially with regards to his apparent simultaneous seduction of Jack. "Cyberwoman" was where the relationship between Jack and Ianto was most intense - and most convincing.
